Large or complex peptides in quantities up to several 100 kg per year are often required today. Special building blocks are sometimes a significant cost driver. Also, environmental aspects become more relevant with increasing material demand. In the face of these challenges, we will discuss different approaches to large-scale peptide manufacturing, covering linear and fragment-based solid-phase peptide synthesis (SPPS), as well as fully-convergent and “fragment-based” liquid-phase peptide synthesis (LPPS).

Stefan Eissler, Ph.D., joined Bachem AG in 2010 after a doctorate in Organic Chemistry (Synthesis of Cryptophycins for SAR Studies) at Bielefeld University, Germany, and a post-doc position at the Laboratory for Process Research (LPF) at the University of Zurich, Switzerland. After several positions as team leader and director at Bachem AG, he currently holds a position as Vice President Peptide Manufacturing Upstream. In this position he is responsible for large scale solid-phase peptide synthesis (SPPS) and liquid-phase peptide synthesis (LPPS).
