1What omega-3 ingredient(s) are you showcasing here at Vitafoods Europe and how can they support better health?
We’re exhibiting our portfolio of premium-quality omega-3 ingredients, including Ultra Concentrates, which provide a minimum 700mg/g EPA/DHA, and our Core Concentrates, with up to 699mg/g EPA/DHA. The safety and efficacy of our products have been demonstrated in over 100 peer-reviewed clinical studies – more than any other marine omega-3 company. For omega-3s in general, there are thousands of independent clinical research studies evidencing the benefits – including for cardiovascular and joint health, immunology, dementia, prenatal and postnatal health.
2How has the consumer interest in and demand for omega-3 shifted in recent years, and how has your company innovated to meet the whitespace opportunities?
Consumers are focusing more on their health and seeking out high-quality, sustainable omega-3 ingredients as the body of research on their benefits continues to grow. To meet increasing demand, we’ve just completed a US$40 million upgrade to our Ålesund facility. This includes the introduction of EQP+Tech, a next-generation molecular process technology that enables us to isolate individual fatty acids from fish oil and ultra-concentrate them without excessive heat or harsh chemicals.
As well as helping us continue to guarantee a minimum 90% triglyceride content across our EPA and DHA range, this will also enable the development of new, highly concentrated omega-3 products across a range of health needs. To our knowledge, no one else is using such sophisticated technology, and the possibilities for manufacturers are huge, bringing them the benefits of high concentration, purity, consistency, and enhanced sensory profile. Further, the upgrade of our facility ties well in with the boom we’re seeing in consumer demand, especially among Gen Z and Millennial purchasers, for ingredient transparency.[1]
3How are your omega-3 ingredient(s) differentiated from other offerings available on the market?
With a 185-year history, we are a business with a long tradition of ethical production and a singular focus on marine ingredients. The vertical integration we enjoy as a wholly owned subsidiary of Pelagia means we can provide full supply chain transparency for top quality, human-grade crude oil. It also enables security of supply from existing sources and massive storage tank capacity, so we can secure crude oil when the time is right, ensuring supplies are maintained in the off-season or in periods of lower supply.
We have pharma-compliant quality systems in place, not just for our pharmaceutical range but for all our products and throughout our entire supply chain, and our product specifications surpass the requirements of the EU and US Pharmacopoeias, the Codex Alimentarius standard, the GOED Monograph, and the IFOS 5-star rating standards.
Sustainability is another critical area of differentiation for Epax. In 2007, we were the first omega-3 ingredient company to receive Friend of the Sea sustainability certification. We never take material from unregulated or unsustainable sources – our crude oil comes solely from fisheries with 3rd party sustainability verification. Our zero-waste policy has enabled us to reach a circularity close to 96%, compared to a global average of just over 7%.
4What type of applications can your omega-3 ingredient(s) be used in, and what product development support do you offer manufacturers interested in using your ingredients?
For over 30 years we’ve been supporting research to identify the vital roles EPA and DHA omega-3s play for a wide range of health benefits. We actually invented the technology used to standardize and control the EPA/DHA ratio in fish oil in order to create condition-specific products. These currently include formulations for cardiovascular health, cognitive health, inflammatory response, eye health, mood, joint health, metabolic syndrome, prenatal and postnatal health, skin health, and sports nutrition. In addition to our standard products, we create bespoke formulas, with around 45% of our range custom-made to meet customer requirements.
