The Probiotics Resource Centre is a dedicated knowledge hub, organised in association with the International Probiotics Association (IPA), that offers visitors the opportunity to engage fully with the sector and understand everything there is to know about probiotics in one place.
Visit this attraction to explore and discuss the key issues affecting Europe’s probiotics market; discover the latest innovation and cutting-edge probiotic technology; be the first to learn about novel applications; get inspiration for new product development; access the latest probiotics research, consumer insight and market trends; and connect with the companies that are driving the industry in 2022.
The Arrival of 2022 is well upon us, and the world has turned the corner, or atleast this is what we are hoping for. Whether in lockdowns, curfews or virtual home offices, IPA’s work pressed on regardless. In fact, IPA continued to work for the industry and it’s future by planting seeds of sustainability, growth, faith and credibility.
Some highlights worth mentioning is the IPA regulatory manuscript. It will grow another eight countries this year brining this very valuable tools outcome to 36 countries and a detailed summary of the probiotic regulatory landscape in play within these regions, for our members to understand and strategically use in their day to day. GRMA together with and using IPA’s manufacturing guidelines have started the collaboration of what will be the only probiotic certification standard for the manufacturing of finished probiotic products. The joint group has begun its work with the hopes of announcing by the IPA world congress Probiotic Americas June 2022 in Washington DC, the addition of an addendum into the ANSI 455-2 public standard the IPA probiotic category of probiotics but also help reducing audit tourism and making for more efficient auditing of probiotic manufacturers
using a publicly accepted standard. Other very important collaborations happened together with IDF (International Diary Federation_ regarding the future of new terms and definitions for all items ‘BIOTIC’. This being a longer term but very important project especially since the proliferation of many new terms …BIOTIC, we as a responsible industry need to create a road map for definitions, criteria of substantiation, proof of concept and scientific assessments that will help all stakeholders identify what all this means.
The IPA Probiotic Resource Centers will also continue their proliferation across the various trade show floors. Other than the Vitafoods Europe, SupplySide West, we will also be looking at returning to the Vitafoods Asia venue and the FI Europe trade show later in the year in Paris at the Porte de Versailles expo. Bringing innovation to the food and beverage industry this will be a first-time collaboration with this event.
Consumer trends have also shifted. We have seen in recent surveys; the link consumers make in wellness and prevention of immune and git health. Classical areas of science where the foundation for probiotics and the category was built on now comes in full circle and the consumer shift from treat to prevent, is ‘top of mind’ for many which has driven thirst for probiotic products that support overall health maintenance and wellness. Another significant outcome in the surveys was how self-education is on the rise as people want to minimize their vulnerability to illness saw GI and immune probiotic sales spike upwards.
Finally, the overall market data coming out from the retailer outlets and e-commerce platforms, is a continued surge in probiotic sales, big growth spurts across all areas, and probiotics being reported as the number one VMS category on amazon and continuing its upward sales growth trend of over 50% YoY.
Reflecting back to when I began IPA and where I was hoping the association would be headed currently, we are well on our way; this is raising the bar for the industry, our labelling guidelines, harmonizing regulations globally, the quality and technical manufacturing guidelines for probiotics to name but a few.
Looking ahead post the pandemic and consumers mindfulness for reducing vulnerability to getting sick and diseased. This has created individual ownership which will lead into personalized probiotic applications. A world where analysis of one’s gut microbiome can let people know where they are in diversity of organisms leading into the dietary microbes initiative, is another important part of this equation and what IPA is currently working on. Fermented foods and the organisms are important to GI health but what about the work we are conducting, what if there is a recommend specific number of daily microbes to support health like for example the recommendation in food guidelines in India. This will not only create a paradigm shift in the probiotic world, but we ill most likely see the crossing of the lines between food and dietary supplements into the Pharma realm. Indeed, the future looks bright but we as IPA must continue to raise the bar and ensure quality and safe products which provide benefits.
...self-education is on the rise as people want to minimize their vulnerability to illness
